2009 Handball World Cup in Zagreb

The biggest sports hall in Croatia, which will host the best world handball players in 2009, will be built on one of the locations in New Zagreb, thus further contributing to the development of this part of the capital along with the projects which have already been completed or are currently under way, such as the Lake Bundek Promenade, MOMA (the Museum of Modern Art) and the business-shopping centre with a multiplex cinema Avenue Mall. The preparations and efforts put into organising this event will be a good test for Croatia when bidding for the Euro 2012, the decision on which should be brought next year. Mr. Lennart Johansson, President of UEFA, told a Croatian journalist during an interview in Geneva last week that he believes Croatia and Hungary have a good chance of winning the championship.

EU Information Centre Opens in Zagreb
Croatian President Mr. Stipe Mesic and Head of the EU Commission in Croatia Mr. Vincent Degert opened on Monday in Zagreb the EU Information Centre, whose mission is to provide services and organise activities in order to become a trustworthy and informative body for all those seeking to gain more knowledge about the EU and engage in the public debate about European integrations. The Head of the EU Commission in Croatia Mr. Vincent Degert expressed his hope that the Centre would become the "place of dialogue and information about the EU“, whose 28th member state Croatia is expected to become. Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission firmly believes the EU will solve its institutional problems in time to accept Croatia as its 28th member state. Croatia's accession to the EU is guaranteed, heads of states at the EU summit in Brussels concluded.
Highway Split – Ploce by End of 2008

New tunnels and viaducts are being built daily in the first section of the highway connecting Croatia's second largest city and its coastal centre Split and the town of Ploce in the direction of Dubrovnik. 96.2km long highway, popularly known as Dalmatina due to the region it crosses – Dalmatia - should be completed in December of 2008. This will make this coastal region even more accessible, especially its most southern tip and perhaps the most famous Croatian brand abroad – the jewel of Dubrovnik.

41%Increase in Passenger Numbers at Rijeka Airport

The number of international passengers at the Rijeka Airport in the first nine months of 2006 increased by 45%, whereas that of all passengers rose by 41%. The peculiarity of the Rijeka Airport is that it heavily relies on foreign clients. Mr. Pascenko, Managing Director of the Airport, claims that these results are based on low cost flights connecting the wider area of Rijeka with the European cities. Croatia Airlines and Easy Jet bring tourists from Bristol and London, Norwegian Air Shuttle from Stockholm and Hapag-Lloyd Express from Hannover, Stuttgart and Munich. The latter one is also expected to introduce the route from Leipzig as of next year, further proof of the popularity of Croatia and especially the regions of Rijeka and Istria as a tourist destination.
